Human Figures

Date ca. 6750-6250 BCE

Movement Prehistoric, Neolithic

Medium Reed, plaster, shell, bitumen

Provenance Ain Ghazal, Jordan

Housed at Department of Antiquities, Amman

These two figures represent a group of thirty of the earliest-known, large scale sculptures. Given their construction of bundled reeds, it appears that scale was an ultimate goal for the sculptor(s); these could have been representations of living or deceased individuals, or some mythological figures, given that some are two-headed.
