Capitals such as these would have adorned the column shafts of the palace Audience Hall of Darius and Xerxes. Just like the columns themselves, these, too, incorporate styles from a multitude of cultures— the bulls, common in Assyrian works, meet back- to-back, a motif often used in Iranian art.
