Group of Mastabas
Movement Egyptian | 4th Dynasty
Unlike the commoners, who would have been buried below ground, the elite were buried within raised structures known as mastabas. These would have left a physical reminder of themselves long after their death, and would serve as protection for their ka, or soul. Goods to be used in the afterlife were accompanied with their bodies, along with their likeness in the form of a statue, should the embalming of their bodies fail and their ka still need a physical place to reside.
