This “Amarma” style that King Akhenaten imposed breaks tremendously with all prior themes of royal portraiture. Depictions of the king show a feminized bodily form with a long, slender face and pronounced facial features; it is unclear as to whether Akhenaten was trying to embody the androgynous quality of the god Aten, or whether these qualities are a natural representation of the king who possibly suffered from Frolich’s Syndrome.
