Mask of Agamemnon
Date ca. 1600-1500 BCE
Movement Aegean | Mycenaean
Dimensions height 12″
Provenance Shaft grave, Grave Circle A, Mycenae, Greece
Like the Egyptians, Mycenaeans also filled their burial tombs with lavish materials collected from the deceased’s life. Some of the dead were also adorned with death masks which were laid upon their faces when buried. Heinrich Schliemann believed the owner of this particular mask to have been Agamemnon, though its origin date would not have aligned with the mythical king’s era; that said, it could have well belonged to some other king or person of stature, especially given its expensive material.
