The most impressive displays of devotion, and wealth, were cast bronze cauldrons that featured protomes of mythical, Near Eastern animals. Here, an animated griffin is depicted with upright ears and horn that contrast sharply with the curves of its eyes, beak and neck; this positioning gives the appearance that the animal is poised to strike at any given moment.
