Kroisos (Kouros from Anavysos)
Date ca. 540-525 BCE
Provenance Anavysos, East Attica, Greece
Housed at National Museum, Athens
Unlike the New York Kouros, the one depicted here displays more of naturalistic body. Instead of smooth planes and sharp lines, the musculature of the subject here swells, indicating actual bone and flesh below; it does, however, feature what is known as an archaic smile—a false smile not mirrored in the eyes. Given the trajectory of these two works and of those to come later, scholars can easily decipher their origin dates, assuming that the general trend was to strive for as naturalistic depictions as possible.
