New York Kouros (Youth)
Date ca. 600-590 BCE
Housed at Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
Like the Lady of Auxerre, the New York Kouros recalls sculptures of the Old Kingdom Pharaohs, with a rigid stance and intimidating frontally. Unlike the Egyptian kings, however, the musculature of this kouros is hardly defined, and appears to have just been etched into the stone; also like the kore, the statue here bears massive eyes, accentuated by stark eyebrows to give a piercing gaze; together, they make some of the earliest known free-standing sculptures.
