Plan of Temple of Artemis at Ephesos, Turkey
Architect Theodoros of Samos
Date ca. 560 BCE
Emerging half a century later than the Doric style, the Ionic style and its trademark capitals carried themes from the Aeolic form, which appear to have originated in Old Smyrna, North Syria and Phoenicia; cities across Ionian Greece quickly entered into competition amongst themselves to produce the grandest temples. Here, Theodoros of Samos incorporated themes from his prior work at the Temple of Hera at Samos by including a dipteral colonnade; however, the resulting work was much larger than his first, and was one of the first temples to be made entirely of marble.
