Dying Warrior
Date ca. 500-490 BCE
Movement Greek
Medium Marble
Length 5’2.5″
Provenance West Pediment of the Temple of Aphaia, Aegina, Greece
Housed at Glyptothek, Staatliche Antikensammlungen, Munich, Germany
Figures in the older, west pediment of the temple are not fully naturalistic. The expression of this dying warrior, for example, denies the agony that he should be feeling, replaced instead by an archaic smile; while he should turn inward toward his pain or the ground to which is falling, he instead props himself up to peer out across the horizon and viewer.
