Eos and Memnon
Date ca. 490-480 BCE
Medium Ceramic, Attic red-figured kylix
Housed at Musée du Louvre, Paris
The deceased figure of Memnon is carried away by his mother, Eos. Memnon’s dead weight, accentuated by his body’s sharp, stiff lines, contrasts with the subtle curvature of Eos’ soft, airy wings as she pulls him upward; Eos’ haunched pose, enforced by the curve of the vase, conveys the genuine difficulty of her task, both physically and emotionally, even for a goddess.
