Model of Athena Parthenos
Date ca. 438 BCE
Movement Greek | Classical
Provenance Parthenon, Akropolis, Athens
The original work would have been housed within the Parthenon’s cella. A chryselephantine cult statue of Athena supports the personification of Victory in one hand and a shield in the other. A shorter distance than usual from the Parthenon’s outer colonnade to the inner would have allowed for a greater amount of light to flood upon the statue.
