Pharos (Lighthouse)

Architects Paianios of Ephesos and Daphnis of Miletos

Date 280-79 BCE

Movement Greek | Hellenistic

Located at Alexandria (Egypt)

One of the Seven Wonders of the World, this lighthouse symbolized Alexandria’s status as a vital shipping port and was completed under Ptolemy II Philadelphos. Its exact appearance remains unclear, but it would have likely consisted of a tapering rectangular base, hexagonal drum, and tholos topped by an immense bronze statue. Ancient texts describe a massive flame upon its top, though contemporary scholars wonder if the surrounding stone would have been able to withstand such intense heat.
