Restored plan of Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus

Restored plan of Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus

Date dedicated ca 509 BCE

Movement Roman

Location Rome, Italy

This reconstruction represents the first large-scale structure to be built upon Roman soil. The pediment was graced by Jupiter in a four- horse chariot while cult statues of Juno, Jupiter, and Minerva were housed in their respective cellas. Columns, rectilinear forms and a gabled roof clearly indicate a Grecian influence, but the frontal entrance and raised level of the structure are distinctly Etrusco-Italic.
