Temple of Portunus, Rome

Temple of Portunus, Rome

Date ca 80-70 BCE

Movement Roman

Location Rome, Italy

Commissioned by General Metellus and designed by the Greek architect Hermodours. Certainly the slender Ionic columns and pediment recall Grecian forms, but as seen in the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, the frontal access (defined by the structure’s raised podium, singular staircase and engaged cella columns) make this a Roman structure through-and-through.
