Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia
Date Late 2nd century BCE
Location Praeneste, Italy
The Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia is a perfect example of the massive scale that was achievable when concrete was used in conjunction with the arch. Hellenistic theatricality is heavily at play here: the visitor rises up through a shaded, barrel- vaulted ramp to a central staircase in the open, with views of the expansive countryside behind them. The visitor would then climb to a massive open court and a small theater beyond, at which they could view religious plays with sweeping views set as the backdrop. Crowned at the very top of the structure sits the temple of Fortuna Primagenia.
