Theater Complex of Pompey

Theater Complex of Pompey

Date Dedicated in 55 BCE

Movement Roman

Location Rome, Italy

Commissioned by Pompey to commemorate his conquests and win favor with the public. While magistrates during the Republic era commissioned works for the public, none were of the scale of this theater. Though semicircular like Greek theaters, the slope of the cavea is artificial. Pompey justified the building of such a massive and permanent theater by including a shrine to Venus at the cavea’s summit.
