Hairstyles changed rapidly in the Empire, and today serve as a useful technique for dating works. Domitia Longina, Vespasian’s niece, employed a masterful coiffure that, as depicted here, allows for a beautiful contrast between the textures of skin and hair, and a playful use of light and shadow amidst the hair’s tendrils.
