Column Base of Antoninus Pius and Faustina
Date 161 CE
Housed at Musei Vaticani, Rome
As the Empire progressed, works took on a significantly more abstract form. The panel of the column base depicted above employs a Classical style, with Antoninus and his wife ascending while the personifications of the Field of Mars and Rome look on. On the adjacent panel, however, the figures have lost their naturalistic, Classical qualities of their counterparts, and instead are depicted as squat, stocky individuals; further, the spacial depiction is confused: the cavalrymen are depicted from a birds-eye view, but the infantrymen are viewed from the side.
