Funerary Relief of Tibnan
Date ca. 150-200 CE
Medium Painted limestone
Provenance Palmyra, Syria
Housed at Musée du Louvre, Paris
This relief would have sealed the entrance to a funerary tomb. Tibnan’s large eyes, hair pattern, dress and frontality hearken back to the portraits of her Near Eastern surroundings. However, her pose in which she holds her veil is distinctly Roman, and helps to establish her dual citizenship.
