Floor Mosaic of Hammath Tiberias Synagogue
Date 4th century CE
Movement Early Jewish
Located at the Synagogue of Hammath Tiberias, Israel
Curiously, the Greek zodiac rests at the center of this synagogue mosaic, and it is bordered by the four personifications of the seasons. Its inclusion could come from the fact that craftsmen from various cultures were involved in the project, and this is especially evident from the Greek panel below. Above, a panel depicts the Ark of the Covenant flanked by two menorahs and ritual instruments. The use of other religious themes could have been used as a way to help Gentiles relate to and familiarize themselves with the Hebrew tradition; regardless, it indicates the vast diversity at this time and place.
