Once it was decided that Mary was to be worshipped as the Mother of Christ at the Council of Ephesus, construction of churches built in her honor began immediately. Architects here employed Classical devices—note the Ionic columns and entablature of the nave. Panel mosaics recounting the Old Testament guide the visitor through the nave and to the apse beyond, which contains scenes from the life of Christ.
