Joshua, a hero of the Hebrew Bible, is depicted here in his military triumphs. It is curious that such an archaic medium (scroll) was used—it could be that it was made as an exact copy of a much earlier scroll, or that the medium was used as a throwback of sorts in the renaissance-type period under Constantine VII of this time; regardless, while pigments were not able to be applied, the figures here were made with exquisite detail, their forms Classical and the backgrounds employing Roman illusionism with architectural structures sinking beyond the foreground.
