Drawing upon Justinian works, the figures here appear stretched and flat, even though their robs display a fair amount of pattern work and shading; their heads contain large, beaming eyes. Though icons were to be copied very closely to the “true” original works, clearly some Byzantine influence has taken hold here—Mary is enrobed in imperial purple and sits at relative ease, while the “defenders of the faith” that flank her are stiff and unrelenting.
