Though the Anastasis theme had long been depicted in Byzantine art, it is revived here with dramatic creativity, even at a time when the empire’s resources were limited. The scene is especially relevant for the mortuary chapel in which it was painted; here, Christ has defeated Hell and Satan, and pulls Adam and Eve up from the grave with dramatic force and energy.
