The character qualities of the figure shine through with their treatment—archangel Gabriel’s robs are metallic and heavenly, and his movements have an airy quality; meanwhile, the Madonna’s robs have a royal, earthly quality, and her steadfast pose is emphasized by the box canopy in which she sits. This is one side of a bilateral icon, which would have been placed upon a pole and be used in processions.
