Great Mosque of Córdoba
Date Mid-10th century
Located at Cordoba, Spain
Built in the last outpost of the Umayyad Dynasty. The arcade is composed of classical columns leading to horseshoe arches with voussoirs of alternating color, topped by superimposed arches. The space appears vast and forest-like, emphasized by a repetition of relatively small and simple forms.
An artist employed an intricate geometric arabesque to grace the qibla wall. Many Muslims witnessed the beauty of God in such geometric patterns.
