Tomb of the Samanids

Tomb of the Samanids

Date ca. 901

Movement Islamic

Located at Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Despite the Messenger having condemned kingly tombs and shrines, the Persian tradition of constructing exquisite tombs was too enticing for Iranian Muslims to not adopt. Here, four massive piers and squinches support a domed roof. The building is constructed of mud brick; while humble, it is patterned to exquisite effect on the exterior.
