Madrasa of Ulugh Beg
Date ca. 1435
Located at Samarkand, Uzbekistan
As the Il-Khan dynasty fell, a Turk-Mongol named Timur came to dominate the area. One of his grandsons, Ulugh Beg, established this grand madras in the Timurid capital city of Samarkand. A deep iwan greets visitors at the main portal, and beautifully colored tiles form vegetal and geometric patterns on the structure’s exterior.
