An even greater Roman/Byzantine influence is at play here—more so than in St. Matthew’s page from the Lindisfarne Gospels. The cabinet recalls the same symbol employed in the Galla Placidia lunette mosaic, and even greater spatial illusionism is conveyed through not only the foreshortening of objects, but also the color shading of Ezra’s form.
