Church of St. Cyriakus

Church of St. Cyriakus

Date founded 961

Movement Early Medieval | Ottonian

Located at Gernrode, Germany

This structure continues in the basilican church format; however, the apse here has been raised to allow for a crypt and accompanying ambulatory below. Also new is the inclusion of a gallery above the side aisles and below the clerestory—its function is not necessarily known; however, especially given that its piers align with those of the nave, it adds a verticality to the church not yet seen before.
