Imperial Abbey of Corvey
Movement Early Medieval | Carolingian
Located at Corvey, Germany
Upper stories of this structure were added in 1146, though the westwork retains much of its original form. As with most westworks, the one here helps to accommodate a grand entrance to the church itself; it appears powerful and sturdy, with the help of smooth planes and simple geometric devices. The galleries of the westwork here would have accommodated the boys choir, allowing their voices to fill the church beyond and below.
