Christ in Majesty (Maiestas Domini)
Date ca. 1096
Movement Mature Romanesque
Housed at Saint-Sernin, Toulouse, France
This piece is one of seven marble plaques, now housed within the church’s ambulatory, but perhaps originally placed adjacent to Saint-Sernin’s altar and shrine. Though the relief is shallow, deep lines, like those seen in Hiberno-Saxon and Carolingian metalworks and illuminations, help to add dimensionality.
