Castles were built in territories captured by Crusaders, which would then serve as expedition points for future embarkments. Romanesque devices from European churches were employed here; however, military defense mechanisms were either created here or borrowed from the Muslims or Byzantines, and include crenelations, machicolations, battered walls, moats and more, which were then brought to the castles of Europe.
