A number of varying traditions are at work here: note the heavenly gold background and highlighted, rope-like yet flat garments of Byzantine art; the Hiberno-Saxon frame and patterns; and the compartmentalizing of figures in the Ottonian manner. St. John playfully interacts with the frame itself—he procures ink from Abbot Wedricus in one medallion, while he hears God’s divine inspiration through the Holy Spirit in the symbol of a dove from another.
