Saint-Gilles-du-Gard

Saint-Gilles-du-Gard

Date mid-12th century

Movement Mature Romanesque

Located at Gard, France

Provence received a considerable amount of Italian influence given its proximity to Rome. For example, the use of three archways may hearken back to the Roman tradition of using this number in triumphant arches—this is applicable here, as Saint-Gilles-du-Gard would have been a starting point for many Crusaders en route to the Holy Land; further, Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem is depicted on the lintel of the left portal.
