The High Gothic cathedral reaches its pinnacle here at Amiens. The interior space takes upon an astounding verticality, the nave reaching its peak height of 140 feet. This verticality is accentuated by the nave’s width-to-height ratio of 1:3 (compared to Chartres’ of 1:2.4, for example). Every feature of the elevation helps to emphasize the sheer height of the cathedral—for example, colonnettes extend not only from the nave to the triforium, but from the triforium to the clerestory as well.
