Garments are no longer composed of flat, bold color as they had in illuminated manuscripts of earlier movements. Softer colors are now employed with fine highlights and shadowing, adding a new dimensionality to the scene; however, vibrant patterns still comprise the background.
Figures sway in elegant form and even step outside the frame, creating a space that accentuates the connection with the reader. David and Goliath each appear twice in the lower frame; however, there is no visual separation between these scenes.
