Basilica of San Francesco

This basilica was commissioned by Pope Gregory IX shortly after St. Francis’ canonization. While the vaulted nave is modeled off French cathedrals, the architect did not implement side aisles or any massive, stained-glass windows; as a result, the walls figure much more prominently and are decorated with expansive fresco programs—those depicting Christ’s life flank either side of the windows, while those of Francis are placed below.
