Artist Giovanni Pisano

Date 1302-10

Movement Proto-Renaissance

Housed at Pisa Cathedral, Italy

Clearly Giovanni was more influenced by Gothic themes than his father—figures are elongated and slender, they sway to fit amongst each other in defined niches; while Nicola’s figures bulge out toward the viewer, Giovanni’s are tucked within cavities, allowing for a greater play of light and shadow. A greater emphasis of the natural landscape and animals also occurs in this scene of the Nativity.
