The Triumph of Death

The Triumph of Death

Artist (Francesco Traini ?)

Date ca. 1325-50

Movement Proto-Renaissance

Medium Fresco

Located at Camposanto, Pisa

Commissioned for an interior wall of the Camposanto, a large cemetery building in the Piazza dei Miracoli of Pisa. It reminds viewers that all beings, whether wealthy or poor, pious or hedonistic, will perish; the hermits in the hills above set the example to forgo earthly pleasure for spiritual enlightenment. The composition is complex and the figures are realistic—it is likely that the painter was influenced by the work of Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
