In the lower portion, Dominicans preach the way of salvation to the laity before the then-unfinished Cathedral of Florence; above and at right, members of the nobility partake in worldly pleasures; above and left, St. Peter guides the righteous through the gates of Heaven. Certainly, the figures and landscape are depicted in a realism that can be traced to Lorenzetti and The Triumph of Death; however, its symmetrical and didactic composition was meant to educate more so than it was to impose a realistic nature.
