This panel would have adorned the palace chapel of Emperor Charles IV in Prague—his own version of Louis IX’s Sainte-Chapelle. As with other works of the time, the figures are intensely naturalistic, and yet have been treated with a delicate softness. St. Matthew’s medieval symbol, an angel, whispers divine inspiration into his ear from Heaven.
