Incorporating naturalistic elements in this depiction of Old Testament prophets, such as a pair of bronze rimmed glasses, piercing gazes, and billowing robes, Sluter here helps define the International Gothic style, first sought by monarchies and aristocrats, and later craved by patrons in the rising upper-middle class. Jean Malouel’s surface painting, all but faded now, would have emphasized these lifelike characteristics.
