Memling utilizes a number of symbolic devices to elevate the self-promotion of van Niewenhove—the aristocrat sits with a gilt-edged prayer book, and stained-glass windows depict his patron Saint and family coat of arms; further, the concave mirror behind the Virgin and Child reflect Mary and Martin in the same room. Memling employs the vivid naturalism of Jan van Eyck but makes use of an expansive background.
