This particular page features Mary at Her Devotions. Here, a woman reads her prayers in a private chapel that looks into a Gothic church, within which Mary and her child sit, surrounded by noblewomen. Though not as vivid as other panels made in this era, the artist nonetheless pays the same attention to naturalistic details as his contemporaries—the reflective pearls, the translucent fabric and vase, and even the fur of the dog. While other manuscript illuminators offer standalone borders, the artist here plays with the mechanism, creating an entire scene out of the border.
