Some scholars view this painting as a self-portrait given the strain of the eyes that may have been looking into a mirror; regardless, they are set in a face of soft, warm light with extraordinary detail—not a wrinkle out of place. Van Eyck has treated the figure with soft shadows and highlights, which are all the more mesmerizing upon the dark, muddled background. The frame inscription reads: “ALS ICH KAN” or “As best I can”.
