Movement Northern Renaissance

This work was commissioned by a deacon of the cathedral of Barcelona. Bermejo does not include the mourners described in the biblical narrative of this scene, but depicts only Mary and her son’s deceased body, flanked by St. Jerome and the deacon himself. It is likely that Bermejo practiced in Bruges, given the intense detail payed to the figures and landscape; however, the colors are significantly more subdued and less vivid, certainly fitting for the somber subject matter.
