St. Wolfgang Altarpiece
Artist Michael Pacher
Movement Northern Renaissance
Medium Carved wood, oil on panel
Dimensions figures life-sized
Housed at Church of St. Wolfgang, Austria
Many altarpieces of the era were comprised of a sculpted corpus that was flanked by outer panels. Pacher depicts the crowning of Mary as the Queen of Heaven; the gilt figures mass together, so much so that only their heads are clearly legible; Gothic canopies hang above. The flanking outer panels are significantly more legible; they depict scenes from the life of Mary.
