Ghiberti ultimately won the competition held by the Guild of Wool Merchants. His trial, here, demonstrates his mastery of composition—forms are skillfully placed within the awkward lobes of the quatrefoil. Ghiberti treats Abraham’s garments and Isaac’s anatomy in the Classical manner—a hallmark of the Renaissance. This work was cast in one piece, while Brunelleschi’s was not.
